Filming of funny kinda guy began
in January 2002, when filmmaker Travis Reeves first heard
that his friend Simon de Voil had decided to take testosterone.
Recognising this rare opportunity, Travis immediately bought
a MiniDV camera and started to record his friend's transition.
After eight months of filming, key events in Simon's transition
had been captured, and what began essentially as a small-scale
personal project had grown into a feature production. Producer
Wendy Griffin, with whom Travis had worked previously on
drama projects, brought independent company Sprocketeers
to the production. Editor Bert Eeles and dubbing mixer John
L Cobban completed the creative team.
Production finance from the National Lottery was secured
through funding organisation Scottish Screen, enabling a
first phase of editing to begin, followed by the second
phase of shooting in Brisbane in April 2003, and then final
weeks of editing and post-production sound. In February
2004, two years after the first scenes were shot, the film
was completed.
